Perception?

Ground-based astronomy and modern technology: larger – offering higher resolution – more sensitive.

In its search for planets that resemble the earth and for the first galaxies, modern astronomy relies on new instruments and technologies that include on the one hand the construction of ground-based extremely large telescopes (ELTs) and the hitching up of several individual telescopes to form a very large composite one (interferometry) and, on the other, dealing with the distortions caused by the earth’s atmosphere by means of so-called adaptive optics. Since July 2008, when it became a member of ESO, Austria has enjoyed access to the world’s most advanced observatory, the European Southern Observatory. This enables Austrian researchers to take part in ongoing cutting-edge research. Examples for this cooperation are the Radon Institut of the Academy of Sciences in Linz, which is working on mathematical adaptive optics solutions, and the Universitätssternwarte in Vienna, which is involved in the development of new instruments for ESO. The presentation will be dealing both with general developments and with topical research in Austria.
