Josef Hron
Josef Hron (born 1956) read Astronomy and Technical Physics in Vienna and graduated in 1983 in Astronomy with a dissertation on the rotation of the galaxy. After a stint as research associate at Vienna University he was appointed Associate Professor in 1996. In the late 1980s Hron established an infrared astronomy working group to study the structure and evolution of red giants. He made significant contributions to the development of IR instruments at the European Southern Observatory (ESO). Research projects regularly take him abroad, in particular to the Netherlands, Denmark, France, Chile, Spain und Italy. As of 2000 Hron was involved in Austria’s accession negotiations with ESO, which were concluded successfully last year; currnently he represents Austria in ESO’s Science and Technology Committee and is active for Österreichische Gesellschaft für Astronomie and Astrophysik.
