On the threshold from the industrial society to the knowledge society the school system is increasingly exposed to pressure to justify itself. Criticism is mounting that school as a system is out of touch with the development of society. The system is regularly being made a scapegoat by mainstream media clamouring for its reform. What we tend to forget is that the school system has developed into what it is today in response to specific societal and economic framework conditions. What parts of the role that the school system is playing today need to reevaluated and possibly redesigned in light of the fundamental changes society as a whole is undergoing at present? Which of its historically defined functions are still part of the school system’s mission? This retrospective analysis focuses on the future potential of what is perhaps the most important of our social institutions.
