Sam Auinger

Sam Auinger was born in Linz. He lives and works in Berlin. He has been active since the early 1980s as composer, computer musician, sound designer and psychoacoustician. Together with Bruce Odland he founded “O+A” in 1989, whose key concern was the “hearing perspective”. Realized projects include “Garten der Zeiträume” (Ars Electronica 1990, Linz), “TrafficMantra” (Rom 1991), “Balance” (Sonambiente, Berlin 1996), “Box 30/70” (Start 2000 Siemens Stadt, Berlin), “Blue Moon” (New Sounds New York, NYC 2004), “Requiem for fossil fuels” (Ear to the Earth 2007, NYC).
The award of a DAAD bursary in 1997 enabled Auinger to found the media band “berliner theorie” together with Rupert Huber. Auinger’s collaborators include the bass player and composer Hannes Strobl (tamtam), the choreographer Marguerite Donlon und the composer Claas Willeke. The realization of several projects together with Dietmar Offenhuber and Hannes Strobl led to the foundation in 2005 of the group “stadtmusik”. Since the winter term 2008 Auinger has been Visiting Professor for Experimental Sound Design at the MA course “Soundstudies” of the UdK Berlin.
