Communication? Is peace something that’s audible? Approaches to the issue of peace in classical music
Composers of both sexes have felt compelled for a long time by the brutal reality of war to lend their different musical voices to humanity’s desire for peace. The presentation will sort the resulting music into different categories and offer interpretations of them. It will be seen that the thematic range of these compositions is considerable, from the anticipation of the coming doom to the expression of the bliss of peace. The presentation includes a wide range of musical examples and offers insights into an area that has been completely ignored up till now. It will also provide a certain orientation, as we approach the problem of peace from an unusual direction.
