relatifs: Practicality of the Impossible

In 1977, while writing the score for Freeman Etudes, John Cage proposed: “We tend to think that the situation is hopeless and that it’s just impossible to do something that will make everything turn out properly (…) this music, which is almost impossible, gives an instance of the practicality of the impossible.” The question Pristaš is concerned with is what can we and our institutions learn from artistic gesture of practicing of the impossible at the time when catastrophe seems inevitable and utopia is more a matter of memory then of imagination?
